examinations

At Dance First we follow the syllabi of the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing), two of the world’s most influential dance education and professional membership organisations.

Taking exams is an important part of a child’s dance development. Whilst not compulsory, we do encourage students to take exams as this gives them a focus in class and provides a constant sense of progression. At the more senior levels exams can count towards UCAS points.

The teachers monitor the student’s progress to ensure that they have reached the necessary standard before taking their exam. This ensures that each student is able to maximise their potential and have the confidence to complete their exam successfully. As part of the preparation for exams, students are required to attend exam practice classes in addition to their normal classes.

We are very proud of our very high level exam success and 100% pass rate.

FeSTIVALS

At the beginning of each academic year we hold ‘in-house’ auditions for our Festival Team. This team is for students who are passionate about performing and who love to entertain. Our Festival Team have the opportunity to compete in competitions and festivals in and around Surrey throughout the year.

Members of the team are also offered diverse and exciting performing opportunities to represent the dance school at a variety of events in the local community and beyond!

Shows

One of the highlights at the school is our biennial show at The Leatherhead Theatre. It provides a great opportunity for the children to experience performing on a professional stage to a theatre audience. This event brings the Dance First family together under one roof and allows the students to showcase their talent and hone their performance skills. It gives the students first-hand experience of everything that’s involved in producing a show from the choreography, to the rehearsals, to the costumes, right to the final bow. An amazing experience creating unforgettable memories!

Advanced Development Training with Jodie Clark

This training programme will push students outside of their comfort zones and take their training to the next level. We are very excited to welcome Jodie Clark to the Dance First team. Jodie will bring a new perspective and influence, focusing on the finer details of their dance training. Each term we will spotlight different areas bringing her wealth of experience to our studio and our students!

Jodie is currently the Assistant Director of the Dance Department at The Brit School as well as a teacher, teacher mentor and adjudicator. See her full biog on our ‘Team’ page.

masterclasses

Learn choreography from a well-loved ballet or a famous musical! Throughout the academic year we offer a variety of masterclasses for our students to complement and broaden their dance experience. These are led by renowned industry creatives, offering a valuable insight into today’s performance world. These masterclasses are open to all our students.

Dance First Theatre Trips Leatherhead.png

Theatre Trips

Twice a year we organise theatre trips which are open to students, family and friends. These are fantastic opportunities for our students to be inspired by professional productions and see the best of the best in action. This is also a great way for teachers, parents and students to socialise outside of the studio. These trips are always very popular!

I have been to many many shows at the Leatherhead Theatre. I have to say that tonight’s show was second to none. What an absolutely superb performance, fantastic choreography with every single child engaged, well-rehearsed and happy. Thank you so, so much. What an incredible experience for my daughter.
I am thrilled that she has joined your school
